Dairy & Arable Farming

The Lakemead Herd of pedigree British Friesian cows graze excellent grassland pastures in the summer and feed on grass silage and a range of feed crops, all home-grown, in the winter. Their milk goes to the Blagdon yogurt dairy, where much is made of its quality, traceability and guaranteed GM-free status.

The land has always been managed with great efforts to sustain its natural ecology with the effective use of crop rotations and the natural fertiliser that is an inevitable but valuable by-product of 420 healthy cows and their calves.

So the move to a fully organic system has been a logical progression - we started the conversion process in 2000 with our beef and sheep and the remainder of the farm achieved full Soil Association organic accreditation in May 2009.
