Organic Lambs and Calves Arrive
As spring definitely threatens to arrive in Somerset, the first organic lambs have been born. Yeo Valley Organic has nearly 80 organic Cotswold ewes on its Mendip Hills farm, probably the largest flock of these rare breed sheep in the UK. The first lambs, twins, arrived on the 15th March and to date 116 healthy lambs have been born in the hilltop lambing barn. From there they are moved to a lower, more sheltered field with their mothers to graze on the rich organic grass.
Beside the lambs, the first organic Aberdeen Angus beef calves have also just arrived. These suckler calves will stay with their mothers for around eighteen months, to develop into excellent beef animals.
Both the lamb and beef is used in Yeo Valley’s staff restaurants and is also sold to our staff. Yeo Valley Organic also launched its first clothing line in 2004 with designer, hand-knitted woollen sweaters using the fleeces from the Cotswold flock.
