Yogurt, Made Unconventionally
The Blagdon dairy started in 1974 with a few milk churns, half a dozen people and lots of experimentation. In 1993 the first batches of organic yogurt were trialled here. Today it supplies most of the country's retailers with a huge range of 'own brand' yogurt as well as some of the Yeo Valley Organic range.
Many of the increasingly-innovative ranges of value-added 'own label' yogurts and mousses are likely to originate from the Blagdon dairy. A brand is also produced here for independent retailers and hotels - Ubley yogurt is named after a neighbouring village (curiously Nempnett Thrubwell, the next village along the Yeo Valley, came rather distant second in the name selection process!).
Blagdon dairy has seen a substantial investment recently but it remains true to its ideals; small batches make great-tasting yogurt without the need for artificial stabilisers and allow the flexibility to produce hundreds of different products for a wide range of customers. The dairy is also certified by the Soil Association to produce organic products and, as demand has increased, more of the Yeo Valley Organic products have returned to the Blagdon dairy.
